Timóteo Macedo, president of Solidariedade Imigrante, criticised the Portuguese government's current migration policy, labelling it “racist, xenophobic, and neocolonial.” He argued that the current administration prioritises wealthy foreigners and those who can afford legal representation, while neglecting the integration of vulnerable groups. Macedo expressed concern over the growing trend of islamophobia, the outsourcing of immigration services to lawyers, and the increasing reliance of civil society organisations on state-funded projects, which he claims undermines their independence and strips immigrants of their dignity, ultimately leading many to leave the country for better prospects in nations like Spain.
The term 'reclamar' (to reclaim/complain) refers to the act of calling out, asking, or begging. It is defined as expressing dissatisfaction, complaining, or protesting against something, or insisting on what is considered a right. However, the term also carries a sense of repetition, as the prefix 're-' implies continuity. This Saturday, October 3rd, in Lisbon and Porto, the immigrant population is organising a protest to 'Reclaim'. This entirely voluntary act, without the support of political parties or institutions, stems from the dissatisfaction and powerlessness experienced by this segment of the population in recent years. It is not an opportunistic political agenda, as immigrants have realised that both the right and the left use immigration issues to promote their own interests. The goal is to be heard in the name of social justice, legal certainty, and respect for a population that represents 24% of the country's workforce, whose rights are far from being respected. The immigrant community will protest this Saturday in Porto and Lisbon.
