ANDRITZ : ENGIE selects ANDRITZ to modernize Picote I hydropower plant in Portugal

Latest news and stories about hydropower in Portugal for expats and residents.

Portugal had never seen an electricity production peak like that of 26 January. That record was driven by a combination of strong hydropower and wind generation, shortly before Storm Kristin devastated much of the country.

Flows of over 500 cubic metres per second are being discharged from the Badajoz weir, forcing increased turbine operation at the Alqueva hydroelectric power station.

The Alqueva reservoir will release more water for irrigation and industrial purposes during drought years. The increased outflow will affect electricity production and will require a review of the contract with EDP. It could also raise water tariffs.
