Court case examines alleged exploitation of young players
A trial opened March 2 into a network accused of facilitating illegal immigration and exploiting young footballers who slept in bunk beds under a stadium stand and received irregular pay and small allowances, Público reports. The defendants allegedly took advantage of about 11 young players promising routes into professional football, with testimony describing poor living conditions and below‑minimum remuneration. The case is a reminder of risks in informal recruitment channels and will be followed by advocates and families of young athletes. Those involved in youth sport recruitment should ensure contracts and living arrangements meet legal standards.
