In the men's pole vault, Pedro Buaró finished sixth with a height of 5.60 metres. Patrícia Silva saved her best for the final metres, leaving Birmingham this Sunday with a bronze medal in the 1500 metres at the European Athletics Championships. The Portuguese athlete entered the home straight outside the podium positions but staged a strong recovery to overtake France's Agathe Guillemot, securing third place with a time of 4:09.22 and earning the first individual medal of her career at an outdoor European Championship. The title went to Britain's Georgia Hunter Bell, who confirmed her status as favourite by crossing the line in 4:07.78. Poland's Klaudia Kazimierska took silver in 4:08.80, while Patrícia Silva completed the podium, 1.44 seconds behind the winner. The race began at a relatively slow pace, with fellow Portuguese runner Salomé Afonso leading the early stages. As the race reached its decisive phase, Hunter Bell positioned herself to attack and pulled away from the field, while a battle ensued for the remaining podium spots. It was there that Patrícia Silva showed her resilience, making up ground in the final straight to claim bronze. This medal confirms the potential the Sporting athlete had shown the previous day, having won her qualifying heat with the fastest time of the round. At 26, Patrícia Silva is enjoying the best season of her career, having improved her personal best to 3:58.74 earlier this year. This success adds to her resume, which already includes a bronze medal from the 2025 World Indoor Championships in Nanjing in the 800 metres. There is also a special family connection to this achievement: Patrícia is the daughter of Rui Silva, one of Portugal's greatest middle-distance runners, who won Olympic bronze in the 1500 metres in Athens 2004 and also earned European medals at the same distance. More than two decades after her father's international success, Patrícia has now added the family name to a European 1500-metre podium.
