Changes come into effect on June 1st and aim to speed up processes
Once the change in nationality law restricting original citizenship to children of foreigners born in Portugal comes into effect, Brazilian families will need to register their babies' births at the consulate-general and apply for their first passport, a procedure that was often optional as children previously obtained Portuguese documentation. Consul-General Alessandro Candeas explains that demand is expected to rise, as many families currently do not register their children born in the jurisdiction. The consulate currently processes about 12 birth registrations per day and is preparing to handle the increased demand. Portuguese birth registration remains mandatory and is a prerequisite for the Brazilian registration process.
The system for issuing the document is currently restricted to the Consulate-General of Brazil in Lisbon. It is expected that the service will be available at the other two Brazilian consulates in the coming days.
