1837: The future King Pedro V, &#x27;the Hopeful&#x27;, is born at the Necessidades Palace in Lisbon; a modernising and widely admired monarch, he reigned from 1853 until his early death in 1861.
1855: Lisbon&#x27;s first three electric telegraph stations — at the Terreiro do Paço, the Cortes and the Necessidades — are inaugurated, bringing the electric telegraph to the Portuguese capital.
