Auditors Find Single Portuguese Case in EU Fraud Review

The case involves an unnamed company and €755,000, including €391,000 received through the Portugal 2020 funding program. João Leão, Portugal's representative on the court and a former finance minister, confirmed that auditors found no compliance failures regarding the country's post-pandemic recovery and resilience funds.
João Leão is an economist representing Portugal at the European Court of Auditors since 2024. He was Portugal's Minister of State and Finance from 2020 to 2022 under the Socialist Party (Partido Socialista) government, having previously managed state spending as Secretary of State for Budget. In his European role, he helps oversee external audits evaluating European Union spending, including cohesion funds.
