The Portuguese government concluded the acquisition of a 19 percent stake in national energy grid operator Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN) for a total of 528.6 million euros. The transaction wrapped up after state holding company Parpública finalized the purchase of a 5.3 percent share from insurer Fidelidade for 138.8 million euros, following clearance from the Court of Auditors (Tribunal de Contas). The deal complements a 13.7 percent stake acquired earlier from Spanish holding firm Pontegadea.

Context & Explainers
The Court of Auditors (Tribunal de Contas) is Portugal’s independent public audit body that inspects and approves the accounts of state entities, public companies and other bodies that use public funds. Its rejection of an organisation’s accounts signals serious financial irregularities and can lead to recoveries, fines or political fallout, so taxpayers and public-sector contractors should pay attention.
REN (Rede Eléctrica Nacional) is Portugal's operator for high-voltage electricity transmission and for gas transport infrastructure, responsible for running the transmission grid and keeping the system stable. It also publishes national electricity consumption data and is the main contact in cases of large-scale outages or transmission issues.
