79% renewable penetration places Portugal in 3rd place in the EU

Renewable sources produced 79% of the electricity generated in mainland Portugal during January and February, according to the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association (Apren) on Wednesday, the 18th, positioning the country as the third in Europe with the highest renewable integration. In its February bulletin, Apren indicates that between February 1st and 28th, 77.3% of electricity produced came from renewable sources, corresponding to 4,000 GWh out of a total of 5,175 GWh. Only Norway (96.2%) and Denmark (90.7%) recorded higher percentages during the period. Hydroelectric power was the main generation source in February, accounting for 37.2% of the total, followed by wind energy at 31.3% and solar photovoltaic at 5.2%. Compared to February 2025, national electricity production grew by 20.1%, driven mainly by a 716 GWh increase in wind production. In the market, the average price of the Iberian Electricity Market (Mibel) stood at 5.1 euros/MWh in February and 42.4 euros/MWh for the January-February period, a 58.5% drop compared to the same period last year. Apren also highlights the economic impact associated with higher renewable penetration: in February alone, the country avoided estimated costs of 48.8 million euros in natural gas imports, 101 million in electricity imports, and 44 million in CO2 emission permit purchases. By the end of the first month of the year, renewables accounted for about 81% of the installed capacity in Portugal.
