Australia has suspended applications for its Work and Holiday visa program for Portuguese citizens. The Australian Department of Home Affairs cited high demand as the reason for the pause, which currently affects 23 countries participating in the program.
Hugo Soares, the parliamentary leader of the Social Democratic Party (Partido Social Democrata or PSD), has defended the government’s approach to immigration as a “quiet change” that avoids ideological extremes. Soares challenged the Socialist Party (Partido Socialista) and Chega to reach a consensus on revisions to the Nationality Law (Lei da Nacionalidade). Visa holders should note that the government aims to position itself in the “moderate centre” while tightening certain regulations.
Hugo Soares is the PSD parliamentary leader, as noted during a recent biweekly debate. He warned the PSD will pursue all available measures if it believes an amendment to the lay-off decree-law approved by the opposition violates the law, which matters for workers and employers following labour-rule changes.
Rui Fernando da Silva Rio (born 1957) is a Portuguese politician and tax consultant known for his moderate, fiscally disciplined approach to center-right politics. As mayor of Porto for over a decade, he was credited with stabilizing the city's finances and overseeing urban regeneration.
He led the PSD from 2018 to 2022, adopting a conciliatory tone that contrasted with the more combative style of other PSD leaders. He lost the 2022 legislative election to the PS's António Costa (who won an absolute majority) and was succeeded as PSD leader by Luís Montenegro. He remains an influential voice in PSD internal debates and is occasionally cited in commentary on the party's direction.
Chega ("Enough") is a Portuguese far-right populist party founded in 2019 by André Ventura. It positions itself as an anti-establishment movement against what it calls a "rotten and corrupt system" of PS-PSD dominance. The party surged from 1.3% in 2019 to 22.8% in May 2025, becoming parliament's second-largest force with 60 seats. Chega's core platform emphasizes strict immigration control—ending automatic CPLP residency, deporting non-independent immigrants, implementing job-market quotas, and requiring five-year social security contributions before benefit access. It advocates radical constitutional reform, including reducing parliament to 100 members, abolishing the prime minister position for a presidential system, and dismantling public healthcare. Law-and-order policies include life imprisonment and chemical castration proposals.
The party is defined by inflammatory anti-Romani rhetoric, with Ventura convicted multiple times for discrimination. Chega maintains international alignments with European far-right figures including Marine Le Pen, Santiago Abascal, and Matteo Salvini. Mainstream Portuguese parties, including Prime Minister Luís Montenegro's government, have imposed a cordon sanitaire, refusing coalition with Chega despite its parliamentary strength.
Brazilian lawyer André Lima explains the legal implications for immigrants who entered Portugal with a job-seeker visa but failed to secure employment, discussing whether family reunification is a viable path if a child has been born in the country.
The PSP explains that the refusals of entry concerned individuals who did not meet the legal requirements for entry into the Schengen area, namely due to the absence or invalidity of documentation, lack of sufficient means of subsistence, absence of a valid visa when required, or the existence of alerts in the Schengen Information System (SIS) or other international databases.
In Portugal, since the entry into force of this new system, waiting times have worsened, especially at Lisbon airport.
