Dakar Rally Returns to Portugal for 2027 Opening Stages

📍 Loulé ⚽ Sports 🧭 Travel#tourism+2 more

The Dakar Rally will begin in Portugal in January 2027, marking the competition's return to the country after two decades. The prologue and opening stage will run through the Algarve between Loulé and Faro on 9 January before the convoy crosses into Morocco. Organizers moved the rally away from Saudi Arabia because of ongoing regional security concerns in the Middle East.

The Dakar Rally is an annual international off-road endurance race featuring cars, motorcycles, quads, and trucks competing across rugged terrain over several weeks. Founded in 1978, the competition originally ran from Paris to Dakar, Senegal, but has since relocated to South America and Saudi Arabia due to security and logistical needs. Portugal has a long history with the event, having served as the official starting location in the mid-2000s and regularly supplying top competitors.

Livre questions Government on 2027 Dakar Rally due to route through Western Sahara

🏛️ Government ⚽ Sports#tourism+1 more

The Livre party has questioned the Government regarding Portugal's involvement in the 2027 Dakar Rally, following the announcement that the race will take place in Portugal and Morocco, including a segment through the occupied territory of Western Sahara. In a formal inquiry to Minister of State and Foreign Affairs Paulo Rangel, party members expressed concern over Portuguese participation in a competition traversing a region marked by conflict between Morocco and the Sahrawi people. Livre argues that this association contributes to the normalization of the occupation and allows Moroccan authorities to benefit from international exposure while human rights violations continue to be reported. The party asserts that the event cannot be separated from the political situation in the territory and reports of repression against Sahrawi activists and journalists. Given that Portugal is set to begin its term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Livre insists that the country should play an active role in denouncing international law violations. The party is seeking clarification on the Government's role and the criteria used for the co-organisation, as well as whether there is any possibility of withdrawing support for the event.
