Yellow weather warnings issued for eleven districts

🌱 Environment 🏖️ Daily Life#severe-weather+2 more

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera or IPMA) has placed 11 districts under a yellow warning due to expected heavy rain, thunderstorms, and hail. The affected areas include Viana do Castelo, Braga, Bragança, Vila Real, Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Porto, Aveiro, Leiria, and Coimbra. The warnings are expected to remain in effect until 3:00 pm today.

A red warning is the highest alert level issued by Portugal's weather agency, the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera or IPMA), used when conditions pose a very high risk to life and property. Under a red warning authorities may close roads, suspend transport and advise people to avoid coastal and flood‑prone areas, so follow civil protection instructions during the Friday–Saturday storm period.

Western Azores under red alert for rough seas

📍 Azores 🏖️ Daily Life#severe-weather+2 more

IPMA's Azores Meteorological Forecast and Surveillance Centre issued a red alert for the western islands as a cold front with moderate to strong activity approaches, warning of increased wind and significant sea agitation, CNN Portugal reports. Maritime services, ferries and coastal leisure activities may be suspended or delayed while the alert is active. Those travelling by sea or living on the western Azores islands should follow notices from the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera or IPMA) and local maritime authorities.

IPMA (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera) is Portugal's national authority for weather, ocean, and climate monitoring. It produces weather forecasts, issues severe weather warnings, monitors seismic activity, and provides marine and atmospheric data.

IPMA uses a four-level color-coded warning system: green (no risk), yellow (potential risk), orange (moderate-to-high risk), and red (extreme risk). These warnings cover conditions such as heavy rain, strong winds, extreme heat, cold snaps, rough seas, and snow.

Residents should monitor IPMA forecasts during storm season (typically October–March) and heatwaves (July–August). IPMA bulletins are used by civil protection authorities, transport operators, and local councils to make decisions about road closures, school suspensions, and evacuation orders.

Stellantis recalls 1.3 million Jeep vehicles for fire risk

The Stellantis automotive group announced on Tuesday, June 9, a recall campaign covering approximately 1.3 million Jeep vehicles. The measure follows an internal investigation that detected an electrical fault which, in some cases, could pose a fire risk. The action applies to Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Gladiator models manufactured between 2021 and 2025. In a statement cited by the Efe agency, Stellantis reported that it will contact owners to schedule an inspection at authorised dealerships at no cost to customers. According to the manufacturer's investigation, the issue is located in an electrical connection of the power steering system. When this connection is faulty, there is a possibility of overheating which, in extreme cases, can cause a fire. The company did not report widespread incidents but decided to proceed with the preventive campaign to mitigate any risk. Stellantis deliveries rose 12% in the first quarter.
