The Royal Building of Mafra - the correct name for the structure often known simply as the Mafra National Palace - has two projects underway as part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). “It was a unique opportunity for us to carry out a comprehensive intervention inside the basilica that, to our knowledge, had never been done before,” explained the civil engineer responsible for overseeing the project.
The historic basilica in Mafra undergoes its first significant restoration in three centuries, bringing back its original vibrancy.
Works begin this Friday and focus especially on the 15th-century Mudéjar ceiling. The project is expected to be completed in the second half of 2027.
Dating back to the beginning of the 15th century, the sacristy ceiling painting depicts heraldic angels of the House of Aviz. Work began in March and is expected to be completed by the end of May.
The intervention at the Torre de Palma Roman Villa Interpretive Centre includes the restoration of the building and the reorganisation of the car park and fencing, according to the Monforte municipality.
The restoration of the national monument's church is coming to an end: 13 years and three million euros later. Information gathered by the conservator-restorers will now be studied.
The municipality, in the Central Group of the Azores, continues its goal of restoring and preserving heritage related to water architecture.
