Revised Statistics Reveal 1.57 Million Immigrants Since 2021
Portugal recorded more than 1.57 million immigrant arrivals between 2021 and 2024, according to revised figures released by the National Statistics Institute (Instituto Nacional de Estatística or INE). The new estimate is nearly 944,000 higher than previously reported, reflecting an average of roughly 1,080 arrivals per day over the four-year period. The statistical agency updated its numbers after replacing survey estimates with administrative records from state databases.
INE (Instituto Nacional de Estatística) is Portugal's official statistics office, responsible for collecting, processing, and publishing data on the economy, population, housing, employment, inflation, and social conditions.
Key INE publications include the Consumer Price Index (CPI), quarterly GDP figures, housing price indices, census data, and labor market statistics. These figures are widely used by policymakers, journalists, lenders, and international organizations to assess Portugal's economic and social trends.
INE data is publicly available at ine.pt, where users can access databases, press releases, and interactive tools covering everything from property prices to demographic shifts.
Recent data revisions indicate Portugal received over 1.5 million immigrant entries between 2021 and 2024, bringing the foreign resident share to around 10% to 12% of the total population. This is comparable to the European Union average of approximately 13% and the UK (14%), but remains lower than in Spain (15%) and Germany (19%).
