Storms trigger 21% surge in complaints to insurance companies on the Portal da Queixa

Complaints against insurance companies rose by 21% in the first quarter, a period heavily impacted by a series of storms. According to an analysis by Consumers Trust Labs, there were 4,302 complaints last year, a 3.86% year-on-year increase. Between January and March 2026, there was an aggressive acceleration, with 1,382 complaints validated—a 21.44% increase compared to the same period last year. February (+32.04%) and March (+29.62%) saw particularly sharp spikes due to severe weather affecting families and businesses, especially in the central region. Claims assessment and settlement saw the largest subcategory increase at 94.4%. Insurance companies are expected to pay over one billion to cover storm damages, though the insurance regulator notes that providing an immediate response to nearly 200,000 claims is difficult.
