EU agri-food trade surplus falls to 49.9 billion
The European Union's agri-food trade surplus slowed by 13.3 billion euros to 49.9 billion euros in 2025 compared to 2024, the European Commission announced on Friday the 13th. The Commission attributes the decline to rising import prices for key commodities such as coffee, cocoa, and nuts, noting that the EU remains the world's largest exporter of agri-food products and was also the leading global importer in 2025. Agri-food trade accounted for 9% of total EU exports, 7.5% of total imports, and 37% of the EU's overall trade surplus in 2025. EU agri-food exports totalled 238.4 billion euros in 2025, an increase of 2.3 billion euros (1%) compared to 2024, while imports rose by 15 billion euros (9%) to 188.6 billion euros. The UK remained the primary destination for EU agri-food exports, accounting for 23% of the total (55.6 billion euros).
