The Environment Agency has definitively rejected the project after the promoter submitted changes to the initial proposal to extract gold, silver, copper and zinc in the region.

The mine would be located in an area where groundwater is abstracted to supply the populations of the municipalities of Grândola and Alcácer do Sal.

Although reconfigured to eliminate a toxic substance, implementing the project on the Alentejo coast poses risks to the water resources used for public water supply.

The Portuguese Environment Agency’s unfavourable decision was published on Friday. The APA says the developer’s revised study still raises doubts about water use, environmental risks and the social impact on the Alentejo coast. Grândola’s mayor applauds the decision.

The Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) issued an unfavourable opinion on the Lagoa Salgada mine project, for the extraction of copper, lead and zinc in the municipalities of Grândola and Alcácer do Sal, after identifying negative impacts on water resources.

The UDCB association says the lithium extraction project in Boticas “jeopardises the lives of local communities and mortgages their future”, accusing the Government of merely “protecting private interests”.
