The project was commissioned this Friday, and the repair of the irrigation canal, which collapsed in the Ponte dos Casais area in Coimbra, will cost 2.9 million euros.

The environmental association Zero today accused the Government of ending Alqueva's resilience as a strategic water reserve by rewarding “poor irrigation management”, which will make an extra 100 million cubic metres a year available to irrigation.

The Alqueva reservoir will release more water for irrigation and industrial purposes during drought years. The increased outflow will affect electricity production and will require a review of the contract with EDP. It could also raise water tariffs.

Consumption will rise from the current 620 hm³ to 730 hm³ per year, an increase of 110 hm³. The tariff for water supply should account for the rise in operating costs.
