Brazilian cinema continues its rise in Portugal with the upcoming release of the documentary 'Explode São Paulo, Gil' this Thursday (12). The film follows the story of Gil, a woman who moved to São Paulo at 20 with dreams of becoming a singer, and now works as a cleaner. Director Maria Clara Escobar captures their dialogue, blending reality and performance to reflect on themes of work, fame, and the pursuit of art. The award-winning documentary, which has been featured at festivals like Doclisboa, will have a special screening at Cinema Ideal in Lisbon with the director in attendance.

The film was seen by an average of six people per screening. It is the most expensive documentary ever: it cost €63 million.

He was born in Portugal, has no nationality or valid residence permit and therefore cannot obtain a driving licence. He was caught driving and was detained by dozens of police officers during the premiere of a film about him.
