Based in Portugal, Brazilian visual artist Jefferson Rib opens the exhibition 'Bum Bum Paticumbum Prugurundum' this Saturday (14) in Porto, dedicated to the world of Rio de Janeiro's samba schools. The exhibition, held at the Allmo space, features works that engage with recurring themes from carnival parades, exploring the artistic, cultural, and historical significance of these groups that emerged in the early 20th century. Rib, a Rio native with a background in scenography, has been part of the Porto art scene since 2018, using various techniques like oil, acrylic, and linocut to explore Brazilian cultural imagery.

The film follows the story of Gil, a woman who moved to São Paulo at 20 with dreams of becoming a singer, and now works as a cleaner. Director Maria Clara Escobar captures their dialogue, blending reality and performance to reflect on themes of work, fame, and the pursuit of art. The award-winning documentary, which has been featured at festivals like Doclisboa, will have a special screening at Cinema Ideal in Lisbon with the director in attendance.
In the spirit of the Oscars, a special screening of short films by Kleber Mendonça Filho takes place this week in Lisbon. The Casa da América Latina will host the event on Thursday, March 12, at 7 pm. Two works by the Pernambuco-born director, set in Recife, will be presented: the drama Eletrodoméstica (Brazil, 2005, 22') and the documentary Copa do Mundo no Recife (Brazil, 2014, 15'). Following the screening, there will be a discussion panel with actress and director Joana de Verona and artist and poet Diego Garcez. Admission is free, subject to venue capacity.
