Operations at Madeira Airport are disrupted this Thursday, April 9, due to strong winds, with no aircraft having landed this morning, according to ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal. Information on the ANA website indicates that two planes arrived overnight, but no aircraft have landed at Madeira International Airport – Cristiano Ronaldo between early morning and 10:45. Two flights were diverted and 20 arrivals have been cancelled. Conversely, three planes departed early in the morning, while 20 departures were cancelled. ANA warns that weather forecasts indicate adverse conditions that may affect operations in the coming days, advising travellers to contact their airlines before heading to the airport. The Funchal Captaincy has issued warnings for rough seas and strong winds for the archipelago until 06:00 on Friday, and the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued yellow and orange weather warnings.

The Aviation and Airport Workers' Union (Sitava) has warned that extending the handling licences held by Menzies will cause instability and disruption during the summer season, accusing the Government of disrespecting workers. The union argues that this decision creates a 'perfect storm' for Portuguese airports, highlighting concerns over job security, the lack of transfer of employment rights, and the potential replacement of experienced staff with workers recruited from abroad. The Government maintains the extension is necessary to ensure service continuity while legal disputes regarding the new tender process are resolved.

Sitava warns that the extension of handling licences will cause instability at airports during the summer, accusing the Government of ignoring workers and creating a risk of operational disruption.

The company is challenging the process conducted by ANAC in the Administrative Court and questioning the operational capacity of the winning consortium, warning of transition failures that could affect passengers, workers, and the operation of major airports.

The airline says it “provided hotel accommodation and meals to affected customers”.

The union representing officers of the PSP (Public Security Police) plans to stage a plenary protest at Lisbon Airport during the Easter period to voice grievances and demands.
