Maternity emergencies shut as waits stretch to hours
Four gynaecology and obstetrics emergency departments are closed, and several major hospitals reported long waits in general emergency rooms. As of 20:00, Hospital Fernando Fonseca (Amadora-Sintra) showed a three-hour wait for “very urgent” cases, while Santa Maria was at about two and a half hours; Hospital de Loures recorded around three-hour waits for “urgent” cases. For expats, this may mean longer delays for pregnancy-related urgent care and more need to check real-time availability before travelling to a hospital.
The SNS Portal is the public online platform of Portugal’s National Health Service (SNS) where hospitals and services publish operational status and estimated waiting times. It’s useful for checking whether an emergency department is open and how long the triage categories are currently waiting.
