'An Enemy of the People' proposes a reflection on immigration while giving it a voice

Director Marco Martins adapts Henrik Ibsen's classic play to explore the manipulation of immigrants' images by media and political parties. Inspired by a 2024 police operation in Lisbon where dozens of immigrants were lined up against a wall, the production features real-life participants to challenge the dehumanisation of migrant communities and spark a collective reflection on democracy and the 'minority versus majority' conflict.

The Immigration Law is Portugal’s legal framework that governs entry, residency, asylum and deportation of non-nationals. It was amended by Law No. 61/2025 on October 22, 2025, after parts of an earlier draft were rejected by the Constitutional Court; the changes reorganise administrative responsibilities and introduce stricter control measures that affect visas, residency and family reunification processes.
