The Ocean Race returns to Portugal in 2027, with Cascais playing a key role in the 15th edition of one of the world's most demanding sailing competitions. In late May, the town will host the arrival of a transatlantic leg starting from St. Pete–Clearwater, Florida, covering approximately 4,500 nautical miles. The 2027 edition begins on January 17 in Alicante, Spain, before heading to the southern hemisphere, Auckland, and Itajaí. The race then moves to the United States, followed by the Atlantic crossing to Cascais, reinforcing Portugal's central role in international ocean sailing routes. The competition concludes in AMAALA, Saudi Arabia. Cascais Mayor Nuno Piteira Lopes highlighted that the event is the result of seven years of negotiations and will serve as a major economic, social, and tourism catalyst for the region.
