The Association for the Defence of Freedom (SALL) and the Prison Guard Union Leadership Association (ASCCGP) have filed a legal injunction to ban trans women from Portuguese female prisons, arguing that current regulations pose safety risks to female inmates. The groups claim that administrative decisions regarding gender self-determination in prisons fail to protect vulnerable inmates and infringe upon the rights of both staff and prisoners. They are calling for an immediate suspension of the current policy and for the state to adopt new criteria. Meanwhile, the Minister of Justice expects to have a prison reorganization plan by March, following reports of mistreatment and concerns over the state of the Lisbon Prison.
