Public sector strike sees around 80% turnout, says union

Public sector workers are holding a 24-hour strike this Monday, March 23, with health and education expected to be the most affected sectors, according to the Fesinap general secretary. The strike, called by the National Federation of Independent Unions of Public Administration and Public Purpose Entities (Fesinap), began at midnight and runs until 11:59 PM, covering central, regional, and local administration. Fesinap president Mário Rui reported an 80% turnout in mainland Portugal by 9:45 AM, with education reaching 90% and health around 80%. The strike is driven by delays in performance evaluations, demands for a new career path for educational support staff, and calls for increased hiring in the health sector.
