Passos' Challenge to the Government

Pedro Passos Coelho is not just another member of the PSD. His words carry weight, and his silence holds political significance. In a country used to verbose leaders who shy away from risks and unpopular decisions, Passos stands out for his straightforwardness and willingness to go against the prevailing sentiment. His frugal and discreet lifestyle, unlike that of other former leaders, contributes to the image of a providential leader who could return in times of national distress. This mystique surrounding him explains why, a decade after leaving São Bento, he is still seen as the natural leader of the Portuguese right. The AD government has, at best, three years to prove its worth, relying on agreements with a PS that does not want early elections and occasional deals with Chega. Economic and budgetary performance has provided some breathing room, but without a genuine reformist drive, the government may struggle, particularly in key areas such as healthcare, labour law, public administration, and addressing the housing crisis, which is perhaps the biggest issue facing ordinary citizens today.
