Vasco Vilaça won the gold medal at the Quarteira Triathlon European Cup this Saturday, dominating the elite men's race and leading a high-level performance by Portuguese athletes, which also included João Nuno Batista in second place and Hungary's Márk Dévay rounding out the podium. The Portuguese triathlete, one of the sport's top international names, confirmed his strong start to the season in the Algarve in a race that marked the beginning of his calendar outside the world triathlon circuit. Vilaça finished the 2025 season in third place in the World Championship overall standings after securing three second-place finishes in World Series stages, a result that consolidated his status among the international elite. The Portuguese athlete also holds the 2017 junior European champion title and the silver medal from the 2020 absolute World Championship, in addition to a fifth-place finish at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, one of Portugal's best-ever results in the discipline. As for João Nuno Batista, he stood out in the youth categories, having been junior world champion in 2023 and junior world runner-up in 2021, results that established him as one of the main prospects for national triathlon.
