Car crash in Coimbra city centre leaves at least two dead

A light vehicle crashed into a gas installation on Wednesday, April 8, causing the death of two occupants and a fire in the centre of Coimbra. According to regional civil protection sources, at least two other people were injured. The fatalities were two young people around 20 years old who were in the vehicle; a third occupant managed to escape on their own. The two injured are women in their 30s who were found unconscious by firefighters in the attic of the building that caught fire following the accident. They are hospitalised in serious condition, according to SIC Notícias. The Coimbra Sub-regional Command reported that operations were still ongoing at 08:00 on Avenida Sá da Bandeira, near Praça da República, involving 40 personnel and 14 vehicles. The National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority website indicates the situation is being resolved. Earlier, a source from the Coimbra Sapadores Fire Brigade told Lusa that it was a worrying situation due to gas leaks and violent combustion. The alert for the accident was raised at 06:18.
