1933. A Porto-Lisbon cycling race featuring records from a cycling 'ace'

In August 1933, the focus of Portuguese sports was on the 11th edition of the Porto-Lisbon cycling race. The DN newspaper had predicted a 'brilliant contest,' and the event lived up to expectations. The race featured 21 registered cyclists plus two Sporting CP riders competing independently. Santos Duarte, a Benfica cyclist, was congratulated after finishing second. In this edition, five cyclists recorded times faster than the previous record. The race started in Porto in the early hours of the morning. The overall winner was João Francisco, a rider from Clube Atlético de Campo de Ourique, who set a new record by becoming the first to win the race three times and achieving the fastest time ever at the time, connecting the two cities in 11 hours, 42 minutes, and 15 seconds.
