Braga Hospital, a surgeon, and an insurance company have been ordered to jointly pay €132,000 to the parents of a 33-year-old man who died nearly a month after surgery. The court ruled that the surgeon failed to take timely action to address post-operative complications, specifically an abscess that was not drained, which constituted medical malpractice. While the surgeon argued that the patient's underlying oncological condition and the complexity of the surgery contributed to the outcome, the court concluded that proper medical intervention would have provided a 60% chance of survival.
