In its 45 days, the war in Iran has caused the European Union to spend 22 billion euros more on fossil fuel imports than in a normal period, highlighting Europe's vulnerability to energy shocks. While Portugal has made significant progress in renewable electricity generation, this success is not reflected in its total energy consumption due to a lack of electrification in the transport sector. The article argues that mass electrification of the passenger and goods transport fleet is the critical missing link in Portugal's energy strategy and essential for achieving true energy independence.
