The regional gynaecology and obstetrics emergency department at Loures Hospital opens this Monday at 09:00, marking the first of its kind under a new model designed to address healthcare staff shortages. This initiative by the Ministry of Health aims to mitigate service disruptions caused by a lack of doctors, a problem particularly acute in the Setúbal Peninsula. The new unit at Hospital Beatriz Ângelo will operate 24/7 with specialised perinatal support. However, unions have raised concerns regarding the lack of additional staff recruitment and the legality of requiring doctors to relocate between hospitals. While the government plans to expand this regional model to other specialties and regions, the National Federation of Doctors (Fnam) is seeking a constitutional review of the policy.
