A family health unit (Unidade de Saúde Familiar) is a primary-care team in Portugal made up of family doctors, nurses and sometimes other professionals that manages a registered list of patients and provides routine appointments, chronic‑disease follow‑up and same‑day urgent care. Because these units handle most non-emergency problems, gaps or shortages in their coverage can push people into hospital emergency departments and worsen waiting times, especially during flu peaks.
