The Judiciary Police (PJ) arrested an employee of a public body linked to the Portuguese Institute of Blood and Transplantation (IPST) on Wednesday, April 22, for embezzlement and corruption of substances. During a police operation in Coimbra, the PJ executed several search warrants, including at the man's home, vehicle, and workplace, seizing significant evidence. The investigation began in January following a report from the IPST itself. The 66-year-old suspect is accused of embezzlement, corruption of food or medicinal substances, and/or spreading disease, as well as tampering with analyses or prescriptions. The PJ stated that the contamination of blood components may be involved, as the suspect allegedly stole and improperly manipulated new and used sterile connection blades for tubing used in blood product production equipment.
