The president of the Alto Alentejo Intermunicipal Community says the dam is essential “to ensure water security, economic development and the quality of life of the region's communities.”

Heavy rain across the Algarve has pushed the region's reservoir storage to a record 400 hm³. In response, all dams are performing controlled/preventive discharges to manage levels and protect dam safety. Authorities say the inflows improve overall water reserves but releases are being monitored to reduce flood risk downstream and ensure infrastructure integrity.

There were plenty of storms over the past year. We moved into extreme drought in parts of the country and, suddenly, there is abundant water and some dams are spilling over. Are we learning from our mistakes?
