1967: A group of Portuguese exiles led by Hermínio da Palma Inácio formally constitutes the LUAR (Liga de Unidade e Acção Revolucionária) in Paris, galvanised by their audacious robbery of the Bank of Portugal in Figueira da Foz the previous month. The clandestine organisation would carry out further armed actions against the Estado Novo, becoming one of the most romanticised episodes of anti-Salazar resistance.

1865: Union troops under Major General Gordon Granger arrive at Galveston, Texas, and announce that all enslaved people are free under the Emancipation Proclamation — two and a half years after the proclamation itself.
