The creation of the polytechnic universities of Leiria and Porto may mark the end of the binary model that hierarchically separated universities and polytechnics. However, the change must go beyond the name and move towards a “comprehensive university” capable of integrating different missions and audiences.

The Council of Polytechnic Institutes considers the creation of universities in Leiria and Porto to be “ad hoc and premature,” warning of damage to the reputation of polytechnics and the quality of graduates.

The Nova School of Business & Economics (Nova SBE) is set to proceed with an official proposal to separate from the Nova University Lisbon (UNL). The Diário de Notícias (paywall) reports this Friday that the request is expected to reach the desk of the Minister of Education, Fernando Alexandre, in the first week of April. The goal is to gain independence.
