French President Emmanuel Macron warned the EU might have to deploy powerful trade measures—described as a 'commercial bazooka'—in response to actions by the United States.

Donald Trump's determination to exert control over Greenland has brought the issue of tariffs back to the centre of the debate, with the US president threatening a 10% surcharge on European countries that oppose control of Greenland. Brussels has pledged to respond firmly, and measures are being prepared.

The European Union may also restrict US companies' access to the European market ahead of crucial talks in Davos. On Saturday, Donald Trump said the US will impose an additional 10% tariff on goods originating from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland from 1 February.
