The National Republican Guard (GNR) has dismantled an organised chewing tobacco smuggling network in Portugal, seizing 635 kilograms of the product along with 72 kilograms of dried poppy, and charging two individuals, it was announced today.

The GNR says the investigation began in mid-September 2025 after data collection indicated the existence of a criminal network involving individuals of various nationalities.

For years smuggling was a means of subsistence for families in the border region. Women played an active role in this kind of illegal trade.

The Portuguese National Republican Guard carried out a nationwide operation during which large quantities of alcohol and tobacco, as well as gaming machines suspected of being used for illegal activity, were seized. Authorities say the action targets smuggling and unlicensed gambling.
