The Portuguese Navy is monitoring and escorting a cargo vessel that has lost its rudder near Figueira da Foz to prevent grounding and to coordinate assistance.

A cargo ship is adrift and at risk of sinking after losing its rudder as it left the bar at Figueira da Foz. In remarks to TVI reporter António Crespo, the vice‑president of the Port Community of Figueira da Foz said the situation was caused by bad weather, which left the bar inundated with sand. “Despite having reduced its draught, the ship struck the seabed,” said Paulo Mariano, adding that they are awaiting the arrival of tugboats.

According to Madeira's Secretary of the Economy, the Prime Minister is already aware of the matter.
At 14:00 a shipment was held at Leixões port. The regional government of Madeira has appealed to the Prime Minister to intervene over the retained cargo.

The complaint comes from the Portuguese Freight Forwarders Association. Concessionaire Yilport will halt acceptance of containers for export from this Wednesday.

The Ponta Delgada Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIPD) today called for an 'urgent intervention' by the Regional Government with the national government to secure a 'rapid normalisation' of the flow of goods by sea bound for the region.
