More than 11,000 EU citizens have been repatriated from the Middle East since the start of the war initiated by Israel and the United States against Iran, including Portuguese nationals, the European Commission announced today.
A “delicate” process that requires “a lot of planning” has no exceptions, only priorities. Some countries are in the middle of the war, while others are only being affected collaterally.
Around 500 Portuguese citizens have already been repatriated from the Middle East, but many remain stranded in other parts of the world due to the cancellation of commercial flights, particularly connecting ones.

Lucinete Freitas was killed on 5 December 2025 by her employer, who is also Brazilian, and was found 13 days later by the Polícia Judiciária (Portugal's criminal investigation police). The family cannot afford the roughly €10,000 cost.
The family has still not secured the funds, about €10,000, to repatriate Lucinete Freitas's body to Brazil. The deadline for removal is up to 45 days after release by the Judicial Police.
