The court upheld the convictions of 12 defendants for works carried out between 2009 and 2017 in a protected area. A businessman had his sentence reduced to five years and nine months. All the structures will be demolished.

The government has designated a Special Conservation Zone for the Douro International Park to protect its habitats, species and landscape values.

Serra da Gardunha has joined the Natura 2000 network. Activities in this area must be authorised by the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests.

The newly designated marine reserve around Madeira covers an area double the archipelago's terrestrial area, making it one of the largest marine protected areas in the EU.
