1974: The Carnation Revolution (Revolução dos Cravos): The Armed Forces Movement overthrows the Estado Novo dictatorship in an almost bloodless coup. 'Grândola, Vila Morena' by José Afonso plays on radio as the signal; tanks roll into Lisbon; Prime Minister Marcelo Caetano surrenders at the Carmo Barracks.
