Viktor Orbán announces resignation from parliamentary mandate after 36 years as leader of Fidesz

This marks the end of 36 consecutive years as leader of the conservative Fidesz party in parliament. Orbán announced the decision in a video posted on social media, stating it was a personal choice and noting that the parliamentary seat ultimately belongs to his political party rather than himself. The legislative elections in Hungary were won by Tisza, led by Péter Magyar, who is expected to take office as Prime Minister on 9 May, marking the end of more than 16 years of Orbán's governance. Magyar wants a more democratic Hungary that is closer to the EU, but maintains some of Orbán's criticisms.
