Speaking about participation in a conference on security in Europe, Rangel says Portugal could join the Peace Council if it concentrates exclusively on Gaza and that Brazil shares the same view.

Portugal will only join the Peace Council created by the US President if the organisation's remit is confined to the Israel–Palestine conflict, Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel said today.
The Prime Minister does not rule out accepting an invitation from Trump to the Peace Council, but only with limits.

The Prime Minister warned today that “any alternative vision to the United Nations” is out of step and will not be welcomed by Portugal, although he admitted that a Peace Council to monitor the situation in the Gaza Strip could have “some participation”.

Miguel Sousa Tavares also targeted the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, over his position on the Peace Council.

The PS secretary-general said today he hopes the Government will consult the party before commenting on Portugal's participation in the Peace Council, created by Donald Trump, and that it will seek the opinion of the Superior Council for National Defence.
