Diogo Carmona made history as the first Portuguese athlete to compete in the Winter Paralympics at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Games. Competing in the banked slalom SB-LL2 event, Carmona finished 18th after the competition schedule was moved forward due to adverse weather forecasts. Despite some frustration with his performance, the 28-year-old snowboarder, who transitioned from adaptive skateboarding, expressed pride in representing his country and paving the way for future Portuguese winter athletes.

Portuguese snowboarder Diogo Carmona considered his participation in the Winter Paralympics very “important” and “special” today, but admitted that his 18th place finish in the SB-LL2 banked slalom event fell short of expectations.

The athlete, who lost part of his left leg in 2019 after being hit by a train, considered that more important than the result was 'the entire journey taken'.
