1455: Birth of King João II (&#x27;The Perfect Prince&#x27;) in Lisbon. He would become one of Portugal&#x27;s most important monarchs, sponsoring Bartolomeu Dias&#x27;s voyage around the Cape of Good Hope and negotiating the Treaty of Tordesillas.
1974: The Junta of National Salvation appoints General António de Spínola as the first President of the post-revolutionary Portuguese Republic, beginning the turbulent transition to democracy.

Works begin this Friday and focus especially on the 15th-century Mudéjar ceiling. The project is expected to be completed in the second half of 2027.
