Portuguese socialists in Brussels argue that regions such as the Azores and Madeira 'cannot continue to be dependent on vague exemptions or good intentions'.

The head of the European Parliament's office in Portugal says the country has changed a great deal over these 40 years and that it brought different realities to Europe: “Before Portugal acceded, the very concept of an outermost region did not even exist.”
The outermost regions, the Foreign Minister went on, “are European territories in which the European Union has a role”.

Paulo Rangel said that the 'reduced attention' given to the territory explains the recent tension with the US.

The Portuguese Foreign Minister warned the European Union (EU) today that forgetting the outermost regions, such as Madeira and the Azores, 'will have a price in the future', attributing the tensions over Greenland to the 'lesser attention' paid to that autonomous Danish territory.
