The Serra da Malcata Nature Reserve, in the municipality of Penamacor, Castelo Branco district, will be a new reintroduction area for the Iberian lynx, the Minister of Environment and Energy revealed to the Lusa agency today.
The Vila Franca do Campo islet, a nature reserve in São Miguel, was closed to swimmers last summer. Only 400 people per day are allowed on the islet, with a limit of 200 people inside the crater at any one time.
The funds are also intended for the year-round maintenance of a team dedicated to rescuing visitors in that protected area, “ensuring a permanent and specialized response capacity.”
The Serra da Malcata aims to protect a wide variety of species. The territory now benefits from a legal framework for the conservation of habitats, granting it special protection.
